Here is how St.Lucia is celebrated here in Norway.
Santa Lucia is celebrated on December 13th. It is usually celebrated with a girl dressed in a white gown with a red sash or glitter belt, wearing an evergreen wreath with candles on her head. She is followed by a number of girl attendants, also dressed in white with one candle in there hand. The boys, "star-boys", also participate in the ceremony. They too are dressed in white gowns and they wear pointed hats and a stick with a star on.
At home:
The Lucia (the oldest girl in the family) wakes up her family by bringing a tray of coffee/tea and sweet-buns called "lussekatter"- translates to Lucia’s Cats. It is also custom to share lussekatter with the closes neighbours if they don’t have children.
Kindergarten:
The oldest children in the kindergarten 5-6 years old have a candlelight parade. They sing carols and give away lussekatter. The younger children and all the parents are invited to come and look at the parade. The parade then goes of to a retirement home, where they sing and give away some more lussekatter. The people there thank the Queen of Light, Lucia, for bringing hope during the darkest time of the year.
Schools:
The youngest children at the school have a candlelight parade. They sing carols and give away lussekatter to the other students.
In some towns:
Offices and communities sponsor candlelight parades in the evening, in which carols are sung.
Hotels
There is often an early Lucia breakfast this day.

the user name is Bubblemunch, congratulation. I am also sending a thank you card to Poetic Dreams, Aly B and Apple for there continually sharing of ideas.
For the give away I split the ideas up and here is how I see them.
Words/phrases/ quotes:
- Inspiration! because it holds all your ideas and prompts.
- What is the origin of your name? Were you named for someone?
- For each of the colours, write what they symbolize to you, how do they make you feel? Add two more to the list and do the same.
- Describe your favourite food in detail by using texture, flavour, smell, and colour. Why is it your favourite food?
- Open a dictionary at random and, closing your eyes, pick a word. Do this three times so you end up with three words. Write for 15 minutes and write down a memory, dream, or totally fictional event using all three words.
- You have the most beautiful copper hair, so I think you should have some of that colour on it.
- What are some favourite expressions that you like to say?
- Just start a list of words that come to mind. Don't think, just list. Doesn't matter what they are. I used to do this when I needed ideas for short stories & it worked well
- Sum up each day with a rendering...instead of putting the highlight of the day in words, state it visually.
- Make an ongoing list of words that I just like the sound of, and ones that I don't. For example, I love the word licorice. I hate the candy, but just like the sound of the word, and serendipity. I am curious to see if a pattern shows up in the words.
- Microsoft word: Bring up an empty page and type in a word. Go to the top of your page and left click tools, left click Thesaurus. Now....you can find tons of words to work with! This can take you in so many directions!!!
- I could add sayings I find in my reading / write down quotes that i find in books as I'm reading them.
-I like to use the words and verses of favourite songs that are meaningful to me and touch my heart as prompts to create journal pages.
- You could put colours in or words you like the sound of or names - each jar would be personal but it would be fun to see what words got taken out at the same time and what visual pictures you could make from them.
- Use a random word generator site like http://watchout4snakes.com/CreativityTools/Main/Intro.aspx You can generate random words, phrases or sentences.
- Use a newspaper or magazine and choose paragraphs, words or pictures based on numbers that you've randomly picked .../ Use a different one of your books each time!
3rd word from first 3 paragraphs on 3rd page.
4th picture on page 4
5th sentence on page 5 etc ... and if you really want to challenge yourself - do combinations
- I like to find interesting phrases in old books and snip them out. I keep them in a box and will pull one out randomly to either write about or to create a collage around.
- I love quotes so would try and include these into my journal.
- I love using quotes on my pages...either made up or borrowed. Find one and design a page around how it makes you feel or what it makes you think about.
- Start the journalling experience with a period where you do some deep breathing. clear your mind. get yourself ready for the journal journey! Then grab a piece of scratch paper or a mini notebook filled with just ideas and do some free writing... give yourself a certain time limit - 5 minutes write words only ...anything that pops into your head.
- Do some free writing of sentences/prose/etc...you never know what could come up...some great stuff indeed.
- I cut words out of magazines before I recycle them. I keep them in a plastic covered container. When I am lost for an idea to journal/sketch about, I reach into the box and pull out 5 or so words and try to arrange them into a saying. This provides the impetus for my journaling.
- I love art journalling and collaging. 'Dream' always the subject that I look forward.

Childhood/ memory/thoughts:
-What did your childhood home look like?
- Name a food or item from your childhood that you can describe in detail using your senses. What memories does it hold for you? Good or bad?
- What are some blessings you have in your life (sometimes you have to look hard for them.)
- If you were able to give people advice...things they should do...what would you tell them.
- If you could go on a vacation anywhere with one other person, who would it be and where would you go? Why?
- Name 5 things you are greatful for, that you've never been greatful for before.
- I have been doing the dialogue thing in my written journal, I love it. You write a conversation between you and someone or something-I usually try it with my "future" self ;)
- You could try a couple of children's books. I especially like the vintage ones. Find a picture in it, and study it. Does it remind you any particular moment in your own childhood? Write about that.
- I like to find old pictures on-line and write stories about the people in them and what I would show them if they travelled in time to me and I had one day to show them around the 21st century...
...then I write a response journal from their POV of the adventure. It helps me gain perspective on what I see and take for granted on a daily basis.
- Here is a bit of a darker prompt but I find that is helps me to get stuff out of me and onto the page reducing my anxiety "what is keeping you up at night?"
- Your box reminds me a little bit of the old Hope Chests, that mothers would put together for their daughters, filled with the linens and cloths they would need in their new married lives. I was thinking your box is already a Hope chest...hope that you'll find inspiration, hope that you'll have the time to work in your art journal. So perhaps that's a theme to work from, in terms of decorating your box...a new twist on Hope Chests.
- Been thinking if ya happen to have pics from the time ya were born till present, why not add a pic for every year? Just pick one of ya favs and add it. Then every year add a new one till it's complete. I think seeing how ya've transformed over the years would make for an awesome Inspiration box!
-How about thinking of your first 'buys' or first experiences/ Your first ________ experience
- The first single you bought
- The first album
- Your first car
- The first poster you put in your room,
- Any new place you visited.
- Someone from your childhood,
- What is your earliest memory?
- What is your favourite meal and why?
- What is your favourite art supply and why?
- What are your dreams?
- What are your fantasies?
- What are your favorite things?
- This box is your dream activation box. Let it contain your wildest dreams for yourself and your life. Wild and outrageous dreams. Who would you like to be?
- What would you like to be?
- Where would you like to go?
- What would you like to have, see, do?
- Why not take a clip art or magazine image of a person and write a diary entry for them? Imagine what their day was like and what they would like to day. This would be a great exercise for writers or even just a chance to get out of your own skin for a while when you're feeling down. =)
- I was thinking...Have ya ever had a dream which seemed so real? Or one which actually came true? How about doing something creative with that?
- Favourite flowers
- Favourite colours.
Props:
- Old childhood toys
- Old family photos
- An old clock,
- Vacation photos
- Postcards
- Old jewellery
- Idea for decorating your box, why not decoupage your sketches, journal entrys onto it, like travel stickers on a suitcase..
- Toys
- Save small bits of scrapbook paper
- Wrapping paper
- Candy wrappers
- Boxes that have interesting cut-outs to use as templates
- Things found on the sidewalk
- Things I pick up when I go on a walk. I collect these in a box and use them for inspiration.
I also love to go to thrift stores and yard sales in search of items that are inspiring to me and that I can use in my artwork.
- One thing that I like to do is collect takeout menus and other things I can use for memorabilia, even if that particular outings isn't noteworthy. An example, when I ate a Chili's a while back with my boyfriend it was rather lowkey but I took one of the coasters and a menu home with me. I didn't write in my journal about that date but one we had a week or so ago. Only this time we had my nephew and niece with us. It was a night to remember, even if it isn't a fond memory but I was able to use the things I had taken home before to journal about this night. The moral to my journal post was to remind myself to never take these 2 kids out to eat in a crowded restaurant again any time soon. It will be takeout for us.
- A mirror would be a food prop. You can draw yourself, or the underside of anything.
- A rock or other finds that remind me of something or someone
- Pictures are always good
- A game spinner with things to make a mark about listed on the chart would be fun
- Dictionary pages,
- Bible pages,
- Old linens, with their intricate embroidery, can be fun to draw.
- You could also use smooth, tactile pebbles and write a 'prompt' inspirational word on each in Sakura souffle pen or sharpie/other permanent pen.
- I would include for sure is different sized lid tops or tubes to create circles on my pages.
- Get some paint chip cards or paint catalogues/leaflets - the page can be set around that particular shade (you can have fun trying to get it right or get a tester!) and some have great names to work around too
- How about keeping some scraps of material or patterned papers in your box as inspiration for designs, colours, patterns, backgrounds.
- Was thinking why not add some special pics of those ya love. Those whom touched ya life and write some descriptive words about them. I think that would look wonderful since ya added a map of where ya were born.
- Even children's colouring books for inspiration?
- Using a quote book?
- I was going through my hope chest & thought why not use post cards as inspirations? Ya can use some from various places ya visited or even have people mail ya a postcard and use it. I think that would be a cool project.
- I have a big box of old postage stamps that I like to use for mixed media art journal pages. They make great inspiration pieces for travel pages, communication pages, and the fun animal stamps can be used as wildlife in nature pages.
- I love using aluminium foil as a collage piece.
- I also like to search through magazines and let the words and the people speak to my imagination. I rip out whatever speaks to me and just collage it without thinking about it.
- I love collecting chocolate wrappers and silver and gold foils. I then decorate my journal/scrapbook with the foils.
- I also use old magazine pieces and try to recreate that piece in my own way in the journal!
- Just thought of another- Collect all of the paper you amassed today (reciepts, candy wrapers, a piece of paper you found on the street, etc.)Next, use the for the base of your page; you could tint them with water colours and then sprinkle rubbing alcohol on it,
- Tear them and place them in a pattern,
- Use them as inspiration for your colour scheme,
- Coat them in thick layers of acrylic and use the end of your brush to doodle in it, etc.
- Create a handful of inchies, place them in an envelope and shake it up. Pick an inchie, no peeking! Now base your spread on the theme/color of the chosen inchie. I also like to use them as a means to date my pages =)
- Each day walk outside and pick up something you like, some thing small. (a rock a Pinecone or maybe a bird feather) Then add it to your daily things.
- I would add a needle and thread to the box. I love seeing journals that have words sewn in or pictures sewn in. It's a lovely touch.
- Using pencil shavings, of various colour, create an illustration by gluing the shavings onto your page.
- I go to library sales and buy the hardback collects of things like Life magazine, incredible black and white photos and text excerpts.
- I also purchase bags of watch parts to embed in pages.
- Why not take some of your favourite words and write them on cardstock - decorate them if you wish - then put them all into a jar - shake it up and take out two words then journal what comes to mind from that.
Observations/ direct instruction:
- Use pink, blue, yellow, red
- Rip paper and glue into your journal
- Use a stencil today
- Use a repeating pattern
- Paint with watercolours
- Use spray ink
- How about life? Maybe a seed growing into a plant or tree? An older person with all those lovely wrinkles?
- Look out the window for a predetermined number of times throughout the day (I did once every hour) and then sketch it into a 1 inch by 1 inch box, like an inchie.Because I was moving I wrote the time and guessed the location of the view from the window.
- If you are looking outside of a building window, this would be great to study light and color and how it affects an image.
- How about drawing things that you can see from one vantage point in your house or outside.
- Draw the piece of technological equipment that's your favorite (Computer? Internet Modem? Printer? All of the above?)
- Make a patchwork quilt in your journal, and fill all the boxes in with things that describe you (drawn out, although using fabric would be cool, too)...a friend of mine inspired me to try this.
- Another prompt I came up with and I have been using is I am drawing (doodling really) a self portrait of myself each day for a week. I make a point to portray the predominant emotion I am feeling and the clothes I'm wearing. Tomorrow is my last day for the prompt but I like seeing the range of emotions so much in my doodles I am making it a regular part of this journal.
- I think it's important to claim your crafting talents to banish self doubt and getting stuck. Why not take a photo of yourself, alter it with acrylics, and then design a crown for yourself. You could even make it a 3D element by using an accordion fold or those puffy glue dots. Claim yourself as a Queen Crafter!
- Also, I found this idea on Creature Comforts, lay in the grass and search for shapes in the clouds
- I figured I'd leave one more idea for the last day before the drawing- it's a very simple one but I've been using it a lot lately when I get stuck trying to think of a colour scheme. Choose any book or magazine from your shelf that you know has pictures in it. Flip to a random page and use the colour scheme from that picture. This has helped me use colours I don't normally consider/like so it's been really helping me see the possibilities of colours and how they're affected when they're used together.
- Never dismiss children's art projects, they can be adapted to your higher skill level. Try shaving cream painting to get a marbled paper effect- use a cookie tray and spread about 1" of shaving cream onto it. Next take water colours or food colouring in eye droppers to paint the shaving cream. Use a comb or skewer to swirl the paint. All you have to do is lay a piece of cardstock onto the painted shaving cream and press to make sure it comes in full contact with the paper. Then just scrap off the shaving cream from your paper and you will have a lovely marbled effect!
- I like to draw lots of different faces on my journal pages. I like to see how many different facial features I can come up with.
Use the sky as a prompt. Draw what you see in the clouds.

Give away - adding vintage paper
I am adding vintage paper, pictures from 1946-54, printed in 1956.
I use a lot of vintage paper in my journals and pictures. I often find text and pictures that has a connection to what I am illustrating and to me personally. I'll give you an example in the art journal entry ticket the text on the paper talks about belief and faith and what it really mean. It is these small things that make my journals interesting to me. As the journal is not only a place to keep pictures, but also alot of my feelings.

Give away - adding pencils, eraser and sharpener
The most basic tools to use when doing a journal is pencils ant with them a sharpener and an eraser comes along.
The sharpener is a Derwent pencil sharpener. The eraser is the most wonderful I have ever encountered. It is a CretacoloR monolith -line. It erase almost every line and it has a wonderful smooth surface.
These are pencils I most often grab when I sketch:
Faber-Castell jumbo grip
Spectrum Pro 4B
Bic evolution HB
Staedtler minerva HB
Staedtler Mars Lumograph 2B
And you get a chance to win it in my give away http://ewian.blogspot.com/2009/06/art-journal-ideas-give-away.html

I am adding Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours
The colours are Cadmium red deep hue, Cadmium yellow pale hue, Prussian blue, Chinese white, Ivory black This is one of my favourite colour pallet. I use watercolour alot mostly because they are easy to travel with and you can manipulate the colours a bit after it has dried. You can do a lot of layers on top of them.

Give away - adding compartment box
I use compartment boxes to store and sort my art supply. They are great to have your supply in when travelling or just bringing your art supply with you out side. I often use the lid as a pallet, both for watercolour and acrylic. This transparent box has four main compartment you can section it of so you get forty small compartment. This series from Clas Ohlson is one of my favourite!

Adding charcoal and watersoluble sketching pencils
Adding Derwent charcoal pencils and watersoluble sketching pencils. I use these pencils alot when adding shadows.
Derwent watersoluble sketching pencils
These pencils have are great both to wet and dry sketching. Water make them ideal for washes. You get three pencils in the wash strengths HB light wash, 4B medium wash and 8B dark wash.
Derwent charcoal pencils
I prefer home made charcoal sticks but these are great when you are bringing then with you, no mess in your bag. The pencils gives you good control they apply evenly. Natural charcoal particles are mixed with clays to produce a rich, smoothly textured pencil with all the character of traditional charcoal. You get two charcoal pencils in medium and dark grades.

Art journal ideas - give away
If you didn't know, I do art journalling. I make a mark in my journal everyday. What comes down on the paper may vary. Some times I write words and thoughts , but for the most part it is some kind of illustration.
I have a box in my studio where I keep props and an old encyclopaedia. The props can be a piece of scrap paper with interesting colours and patterns, a piece of yarn or ribbon, a newspaper article, a found element with a great texture. All things that I use in my art journal in some way. I attach it to my pages or use it as a inspiration. The old encyclopaedia, I can cut out word that I like or just phase through it to find some interesting things I want to make an entry about. I have found a new and more study box, it use to be an ammunition box so it should hold up. I am going to decorate it, not sure how yet. It is a large box so there are room for a lot of ideas and props.
I know there are many ideas out there on the web, but I would like some input from the people that comes through here on my blog. I want input and ideas to my journalling. It can be a word you like or a suggestion to a prop/property, only your imagination sets the limit.
I am wondering can you give me an idea for a prop?
As a reward for you stopping up and writing a comment I'll give you a chance to win a prise! I am putting together an art journal parcel starting today with what you see below, each Friday through the summer I'll add something to the pot. I'll draw the winner on the 21 of August.
You are more than welcome to blog about this on your own blog, but it is not obligated!
To start of there is the journal and a pen.
The journal is a Canson sketchbook, see this blog post http://ewian.blogspot.com/2008/12/dream-journal.html for details and on how I compared it to other journals.
The pen is a Medallion drawing pen, permanent marker, colour black, size 0.1, one of my favourite pens as it is water proof, it don't only say that it is, it works! Here is a blog post http://ewian.blogspot.com/2009/02/edm-8-organized-chaos.html where the pen was illustrated.

Boxes - I have an idea or two

First I like to say thank you so much for all the great ideas! There is no doubt that you can do great things with boxes. A lot of you suggested altered art in some form so when summer comes, and school is out I'll give it a try!
The winners
1st: Vicki Robison and I'll take her up on her suggestion and make a small medicine cabinet/box, she will also receive 1 box of embodier floss,1 box of blue pearls, 2 box of precut Norwegian vintage paper from 1925 and 1943!
2 consolation prizes LaY hOoN and Brenda. They will get 3 boxes each, 2 boxes whit the same vintage paper as the first prise and the last box I'll fill with scrap, mostly Christmas theme or you can have the same small medicine cabinet/box as Vicki, your choise. (I'll send you a mail for details.)
Stacy and Kristine asked where I got these boxes, well I have a wonderful spouse that rescued them form going in the recycle bin at his work. So now I get to recycle them! They are original for having hard candy in.
Rena Sawatski mentioned ATC sadly the boxes are to small.
Have you read the comments? There are just plenty of good ideas!
I have edit some of the text to sum up the ideas, if you publish it in some form please give credit where credit is do……

Sand the tin. Then soak in vinegar (or vinegar & bleach) with a piece of rusty metal. When the tin box rusts you dry & spray with sealer & then decorate as you wish.
Kathy said...
Make assemblage's (mixed media) from these types of tins. My secret (not any more) is to throw them in the fire and let the paint burn off, then I leave them outside to rust to perfection. I have also spray painted them to use as well.
whyte said...
Spray paint the outsides, collage the top of the lid and melt some nice candlewax from a pooped out scented candle or wax melt, pour into the tin, add a new wick, ta-dah, new candle tin.
Brenda said...
Sand them lightly, coat with gesso and then other coats of acrylic and I have melted UTEE onto them, of course images as well, you could use one as a canvas for a mini piece of art - oh the possibilities, drool. How about using one for a mini photo album that concertinas out?
Rose said...
I'd collage them and then make little sewing kits from them or put a little trinket in them and use as a gift or table favor.
Rena Sawatski said...
Collage, paint, distress, do assemblage. You could make them into an art doll. Decorate the inside, add a little book or possibly use them for ATC's.
Oh, How about making a shrine with them?
thismuseofmine said...
As several of the ladies said you can alter them and make assemblages, I have done that. I noticed that no one mentioned Alcohol inks. They work well for metal, so you might try that. Here is a link that I love to go to for a little inspiration:
http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/alttins.html
This is something I have done with my girl scouts before. They LOVED it. They are middle school age, so they have all kinds of things like gum and lip gloss, etc that they can put in them. Again here is a link: http://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?projectID=2032
My very favourite thing that I have done with little tins was when my little niece was born a premie, and she was quarantined, so no one could come and visit. EVERYONE wanted to see pictures- it is so hard to carry them around in your purse without them getting ruined, so I made a little accordian book that went inside the tin. When the lid opened you just pulled on the end of the card, and you could see 6 pictures of her, and then you turn it the other direction and you can see 5 more. Then you just fold it back up and it goes right back in. Of course I decorated it, inside and out, but I made sure the decorations were things that would stay on really tight, so that when it was rattling around in my purse it would still be really pretty.
These make GREAT baby gifts- or gifts for the grandma's- all they have to do is attach the pictures and they have a great brag tin. You actually could make these for any holiday, or for any age kids. If you wanted to just have one to show off your kids. You could even do one with those photo corners, so you could change the pictures out when your kids get new ones every school year like ours do.

The downside of boxes is that they get messy themselves, hard to keep track of the right boxes. So if you had a tiny shelf where they fit it would be great. Or if you add fronts to them , and make them into tiny drawers, a lot of work but I think it will be very nice. -and organized.
Can also be used to make our wedding-invitations!
LaY hOoN said...
I think I'll turn the metal box into altered art piece, will put in my daughters picture in it.
Poetic Dreams said...
I think I would make them into a sweet love note for someone special. Take paper and fold it accordian style. Glue the last sheet in the tin and add a lil ribbon to the front sheet to use as a pully. That is after ya've written ya special message on it.
These would be nice to leave hidden as a treasure to find. I used to leave notes in my children's lunch boxes or hubbys pant pockets for them to find.
angeltreats said...
Similar tin boxes that have been covered with polymer clay (Fimo, Sculpey etc). Like here: http://www.desiredcreations.com/howTo_PJCoverAltoid.htm
A Christmas idea.
Ya know those advent calenders? Why not make one with the tins? All ya have to do is take 25 of them, Put a special picture on the inside (use up those Christmas cards ya received) then add a lil Knob on the front of it to open the tin. Then when Christmas comes ya can add a Lil Treat inside each box before ya put it out. Ya can either add a nice lil trinket toy or a small candy. I think that would be an awesome thing to make with the tins.
They're all the same size and it'll look so cute! All ya have to do is decide if ya want to hang it or have it as a free form stand. If ya make it to hang I would glue the tins to some kind of board. Like a small Cork Board.Or ya can even recycle an old Cookie sheet and add the maganetic sheet to the back of each tin and then it'll hang on the cookie sheet.
If ya make it free form then ya can get one of those large Plexic glass free standing Picture frames and glue them on it. Ya can then slide a piece of Christmas wrap inside the frame. OH! and ya could even use this same idea for a countdown for the other hoilidays. Valentines,Easter, Etc.. Then all ya do is change the background by just sliding the piece out of the frame! How cool is that? lol
Camille said...
Take the tins and use, sand paper or a file, and scuff them up really well, leaving the edges around the opening bits nice and smooth. You don't want to mess up the open/close part of the box, or the hinges.
Take a min and look at the box and see how you would like it to hang on the wall. Being careful, take a nail and hammer, prop the portion of the tin to be punched on a piece of wood and make a tiny hole for ribbon later. You can use your hammer to make the sharp bits of the opening lay flat with one good wack.
Now get some clay. I use sculpty, but try any you have on hand, even Air dry should work just fine.
Go around the bottom and sides of the tin, leaving the hinges and closing lip of the box plain (no clay). When you have covered the bottom, texture and decorate however your heart desires.
Now to do the top of the box. Get some Tin Foil, Clay, a pce of clear plastic (I save them off everything, even shrink wrap would work), and that nail and hammer again (or if you have a drill tool it will make life easy).
Draw with a permanent marker an outline of a frame. Make sure to leave enough around the edges to give some interest, and accept the clay. After you have cut out the center portion of the lid, use the file or hammer to knock down the sharp bits.
Go around the top of the lid just as you did the bottom of the box, but now get funky. Make a Frame around the top of your box!. Use the Tin Foil to prop up the clay and make it larger than the box. Now bake or let air dry.
When it is dry or cools off trim with a fingernail file any parts you think need to go. Dust it off.Get ready to make it your own.
Paint it, stain it, make it the way you want it to look. I usually think about what is going inside and go with that theme.
When its dry. Open it up and insert your ribbon hanger. Once that is in, cut felt or fabric or scrapbook paper for the sides and background and insert little things you want inside. Make sure to use glue to keep it all standing!.
Lay the lid open and take the shrink wrap or plastic cut it to just a little wider than the window you made, glue the edges and pull it tight.
Now you have a pretty tiny little shadow box, ready to hang on your wall for all to see!.

Here's an idea - that I just bought a dozen tin boxes to do - I think I first planned this when I heard about Oprah's Christmas box - with a template to print little cards. I want to personalize one for each member of my family(7 here in CA) and then print out blank cards and give 7 blanks to each person to write a note to a family member and slip it into their box - The boxes will be in a central location in the house and cards can be secret if so chosen. Hopefully these little gifts can go into the Easter
baskets. Wondering if I should title the cards with...something like " The nicest thing about you is...
I love the tins to store stuff in too so I have some left over.

Decorate the outside in the various ways already outline in other comments and turn them into paint palettes by glueing whole pans and half pans in the inside. It makes a great little travel palette for a fraction of the cost of buying a travel palette from the art supply companies.

Sand them well, then make a little shrine from them, for a person who has passed, or an idol of some sort.
OR take a hint from your GM and decorate them, and put journaling prompts inside, or technique prompts, then put them all in a bowl and choose one every time you need an idea!

Line it with felt and make an mp3 player holder.

Sand them but I do think I will have to try the fire bit now! Mine are made for captured fairies and saved fairy babies that need tiny places to sleep and be safe until they get there full wings. Like a cocoon only a found tin.
Collage some, paper butterflies are great for decorating them and now there are so many nice brads and grommets that you can insert through the cover!

Alter them with papers and collage, then create fold-out books that attach and fit inside. I usually choose a theme for the whole piece and carry it throughout. I also love to use tins as personal shrines - great gifts!

Decorating them (like collaging them) and then giving them to a loved one as pill boxes or have little notes inside for that person.

They could be hundreds of things. But maybe look around and see what you need or what could make life exsier? Storage, shrine, small med kit, drawing kit, painting kit, medicine cabinet.

I would utilize some of the earlier suggestions and distress/paint them and use them as bodies for dolls. Add a head or face on top, limbs and you've got a great little art doll!

Bar Mitzvah idea. For a present I am making him a Mezuzah. It's a small prayer box that hangs at the door of the rooms in the house. Inside the box is a prayer. The outside is decorated in many different ways. I sanded an Altoids box, the thin one not the square-ish one. I covered it in vintage text. On the top of the box, which really is the side as I am using the box on end so it opens like a book, I put a vintage small plastic toy shepherd with a lamb on his shoulders. On the front of the box I put a really tiny, one inch high Frozen Charlotte doll, bisque from the 1800's Germany. I dipped her feet in super tiny beads and glue before attaching. I used a large fox head charm over the doll. Then I layered gold, verde and touches of black paint to make it look like old metal with the text showing through in places.I used polymer clay as putty around all of the additions so they were seamless, actually coming out of the box like a sculpture rather than an assemblage. When it was finished I put 5 or 6 coats of high gloss varnish on the entire box. When I gave it to my friend she got the prayer and put it in the box for her son to hang outside of his bedroom door. If I were to do it again I wouldn't make a prayer box, I'm not Jewish, but I would love to do it again as a shrine.

Semi translated from Kristine who think people prefer to read short blogposts and not thesis... (I must say I think it is so nice to get comments is the joyful languish of NyNorsk (New-Norwegian)!)
Here goes:
A box to keep the coughing pills or is it anti-coughing pills in, having a cold.
Memory-boxes, you put all kinds of small things in the box, mostly like things like papers and pictures and then you forget about it! When you open it in years to come you will find a wonderful surprise, ain’t that neat?
Buttons, buttons and more buttons… addicted to buttons so it would be great putting some buttons in the tin.

St. Lucia give away
The day of St.Lucia is on December 13, but I want to do this give away now so the winner can get it’s packed in time for St.Lucia day.
I celebrate Christmas and I celebrate St.Lucia, I am not catholic but the Lucia tradition is strong here. I also like the Lucia celebrating, it is not about what am I going to get, but what can I do for others.
How it is celebrated here in Norway.
The give away.
