EDM # 8 - jewellery

The EDM challenge number 8 was "Draw your watch or other piece of jewellery" I stopped using watches (that thing telling you that you are going to be late on your wrist) when cellphones started to show the time on the display. As for jewellery I only use a gold ring, not exciting enough to draw. So I chose to draw a piece of jewellery that I have been fascinated of since the first time I saw it, the Cameo. Art journal - ticket

My Nana, grandmother, died Monday. I will miss her tremendously. We had a close friendship. In addition to being my grandmother she was a close friend, we shared a lot of common interest among many things the love of books, crafts and family. When we talked about death she said that she was not afraid to die. She had her ticket to heaven ready, it was just a mater of time before the conductor called her on board the journey to heaven. It is a slim comfort that she was old and did not suffer much. It does not take away the terrible void she is leaving. My art journal entry is the quote she used to say "I have the ticket to heaven".

IF - clandestine

I have only encountered the world clandestine, in relationship to illegal labs. (English is not my native tong.) As I am taking chemical science classes I thought it would be fun trying to do one illo for this weeks entry for Illustration Friday with a chemical twist.

Art journal - ice skating

Ice skating, it has been many yeas since I last ice skated. I think about 15 years... Not that I suddenly started doing it again, but the roads has been slippery. First a lot of snow, then rain and then frost. It all made it in to wonderful ice skating and chair sledge days.

Dream journal

Finding the dream journal is not easy. I love to test art and craft supplies and I do it fervently. My opinion is that if you don't play around with your supplies you do not know what they can do for you. This time it was art journals. 14 of them! I chose to make a picture rather than just test the different mediums. There is still a bit of plan behind the pictures. The large blocks of colours was laid down this way to test how much the paper would curl. Different brushes was used to see how the paper reacted. There is a lot of small things that I look for to find a good journal. I made my self a diagram with the property that I am looking for. I'll add property as I remember them/ find the need to have them. It is all about finding the balance what is important to me and what is important to you, and what to write there. If there is element/property you want to know that I have not written about just let me know, there is a good chance that I have tested it but did not write about it here. Or I can test it. Let me tell you about the life of a journal in my care, one journal lasts about a month. I carry it with me when ever I go out and it gets drawed and painted in several times a day. So this first month it has a bit of a ruff life. After when there is no more blank pages it retires/moves in to the bookshelf with all my other old doodle book and journals. Here it stays until I need some of the sketches or just some inspiration. So now and again it comes out.

Testing the journals did not take so long but writing down all the findings was a large job.

The pictures is made by drawing a picture with a 3B pencil. Then traces with a permanent marker. The pencil marks is then erased. Then the picture is then coloured in with watersoluble wax crayons. Some areas is coloured in with watercolours. Then it is stamped and iridescent is painted on the trumpet.

I prefer an art journal that is not spiral bound, although this tend to lie flat, I like to be able to make my picture on both sides of the open page not having a hole in the picture.

Best drawing: both Daler - Rowney, sketchbook AND Canson, sketchbook.

I want better watercolour paper than Hand Book Artist Journal, Daler - Rowney, sketchbook and Canson, sketchbook, and better drawing paper than Kilimanjaro, and it would not be fear to compare the custom ordered as they are all unique.

I have to many elements I want to have in my dream journal. So I am sorry, I can not tell you the one journal I would prefer over all others, but I wanted to give you an insight in the quality of the journals and show you some of the elements you may look for.

Testing art journals

Reading for exam, just one more to go this year. I decided to take the weekend off, can't read all the time. So what do I do when I have the weekend off, well this weekend I am decorating the house for Christmas and testing art journals! 14 of them! Some masspruduced and some one of a kind. Making a picture in each and every one of them with the same mediums. This way I'll know how they react and I can compare them to each other.


Why all this work? Well I eat art journals, well that is not correct, but I go through a lot of them and I need to find a journal that meets my needs, this will give me more time creating and less time searching for a good journal. I like my art journals so that I can draw and paint in them not limited of the tooth of the paper or if they can handle water. In the picture you see the start. This will be fun. I'll keep you updated with the result.

IF - balloon

This is actually an art journal entry from last Wednesday. I have been busy with exams and decided that it would have to to for this weeks IF. The original idea came from the phrase "Some glad morning...I'll fly away" Medium is watercolour crayons, just testing out some new ones from Staedtler called karat aquarelle. So far there is a bit more resistance in this crayons compared to the other ones I have, but it maybe the paper. A bit more testing is needed.

Medium used: Watersoluble wax paste from Staedtler and permanent marker.

Art journal - dancing with knitting needles

I am so happy, my order with knitting needles came today. The girl in the picture has a dress made of felted wool, just a cut of scraps from this summers felting. The flowers are green spangles and the knitting needles are made by permanent markers. Yes, the clouds are made of glitter! Other than that watercolours are used.

I have been waiting since may for these. I ordered from Michelles Garage Sale and I know they were sent shortly after I ordered but my post office lost them! Today I got a call saying they have fond them, this really made my day. This was not just ordinary knitting needles they have colours!
I can not get a hold of them here in Norway, just plain grey ones. I ordered Susan Bates silvalume double pointed knitting needles. Finding a company that would send them was also a bit of a trouble, did not wanted to be ripped off by the price of the postage. If you know a brand that make coloured knitting needles( not plastic) other than Susan Bates and if you know of company's that sends to Norway please let me know. Although I am happy with the service of Michelles Garage Sale I want to find a better selection if possible.

1. I love books! I hoard them and read them. My childhood dream was to have a house large enough to have a library. My studio doubles up as a library! AND is is wonderful!

2. I am a audio learner. I listens to pod casts, radio or audio books. When I drive and when I work, it is a grate way for me to multi task. I am one of those people that listen to the text of the song, and if it is no good I prefer silence....

3. My favourite thing to do with my friends and family is playing board games, all can play along, age and level don't matter!

4. I collect postcards, also the ones that have no writing on the back.

5. I vote! It is my opinion if you don't vote you have no right to complain! This does not apply to children that do not have the opportunity to vote.

6. My favourite pie is pumpkin-pie, maybe because I only get a hold of pumpkins ones a year. I have a suspicion that chocolate pie would come very high up if I ever tasted it.

Swim team

Here is my swim team. Made a team with 9 girls/ladies all with different personality's.
Not sure if they will break the world record but they will sure try.

The team is made on watercolour paper with watercolour both paint and pencils and some painted vintage paper.

Art journal - First snow

The first snow is here! It always comes like a surprise. It is actually 20 days later this year than last year. My art journal today was a snow scene, with two small hares/bunnies out waking in the snow. The background is watercolour, the hares is made with permanent markers and iridescent medium.
Detail, even with no blitz the reflektion make it hard to get a good picture. Here is the view from the road 0730 in the morning. Beautiful is'nt it?

EDM # 6 - favorite well-loved object

This object is a wooden bowl, it is actually my grandmothers, it sits on her living room table and is filled with small paper pieces, manna-corn, on them is bible verses or to be more correct it says where to look up the bible verses. My grandmother use to draw one piece for everyone that was visiting and then read the verse before the went home. The faint letters on the bowl says "in memory of the peace, Narvik, 1945" As long as I can remember the bowl and the manna-corn has had the same colour tones always looked well used. This is me trying to capture a memory of my grandmother reading the bible verses to us before we left for the road home.

Art journal - butterfly dress

I am starting a new journal, the first entry is a girl with a butterfly dress. The dress has holes in it to the shape of the butterfly. It has been a while since I made holes in my art journal pages, so it was a bit tricky to get the holes small with the scissor. I probably could have made the holes with a knife, but as I was travelling the scissor was all I had in my bag. New journals is always fun. This time I am trying out a journal form hand book journal, have not tried this type before and I am so excited to try this one out.

St. Lucia give away

The day of St.Lucia is on December 13, but I want to do this give away now so the winner can get it’s packed in time for St.Lucia day.

I celebrate Christmas and I celebrate St.Lucia, I am not catholic but the Lucia tradition is strong here. I also like the Lucia celebrating, it is not about what am I going to get, but what can I do for others.

How it is celebrated here in Norway.

Santa Lucia is celebrated on December 13th. It is usually celebrated with a girl dressed in a white gown with a red sash or glitter belt, wearing an evergreen wreath with candles on her head. She is followed by a number of girl attendants, also dressed in white with one candle in there hand. The boys, "star-boys", also participate in the ceremony. They too are dressed in white gowns and they wear pointed hats and a stick with a star on.

At home:
The Lucia (the oldest girl in the family) wakes up her family by bringing a tray of coffee/tea and sweet-buns called "lussekatter"- translates to Lucia’s Cats. It is also custom to share lussekatter with the closes neighbours if they don’t have children.

Kindergarten:
The oldest children in the kindergarten 5-6 years old have a candlelight parade. They sing carols and give away lussekatter. The younger children and all the parents are invited to come and look at the parade. The parade then goes of to a retirement home, where they sing and give away some more lussekatter. The people there thank the Queen of Light, Lucia, for bringing hope during the darkest time of the year.

Schools:
The youngest children at the school have a candlelight parade. They sing carols and give away lussekatter to the other students.

In some towns:
Offices and communities sponsor candlelight parades in the evening, in which carols are sung.

Hotels
There is often an early Lucia breakfast this day.

IF - repair

My entry for illustration Friday this week is a doctor. One of the most fascinating repairs I know is surgery. Not that I study them, but it is can be so life changing for the people (or animals) getting them.

The illustration was made by sketching with a 3B pencil and painted with watercolour.
